“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away …” We all remember when these words appeared on our screens. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope ignited the imagination of different generations. It became a phenomenon and still inspires and influences contemporary films and music. From its plot, characters, and special effects to the incredible music composed by the legendary John Williams, the cultural impact is undeniable.

And what better way to honor and spotlight the iconic 1977 film than to experience it while the 81-piece Filharmonika Orchestra, led by Gerard Salonga, performs John Williams’ Oscar®-winning score live? Sci-fi enthusiasts, as well as music and film fans, flocked to The Theatre at Solaire on Sept. 7 and 8 for Star Wars: A New Hope In Concert.

Before the start of the first show on Sept. 7, members of the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire were ready with their lightsabers and blasters — for photo op, of course! It made my geeky heart happy to see the younger generation excited for this event, as they also enthusiastically posed with the ardent cosplayers. It was a testament to how timeless the Star Wars saga really is.

Entering the theater, the members of the Filharmonika Orchestra were seated and warming up for the show. When the Maestro Gerard Salonga took the stage, the audience knew it was time, and we were more than ready.

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope started playing on the screen, and the orchestra performed the 20th Century Fox Fanfare. When the unforgettable first notes of the Main Title started playing, I had goosebumps, and I knew I wasn’t the only one feeling the frisson of excitement.

I have not rewatched the film in a while, but it was easy to see and understand how this movie, released in 1977, inspired different generations.

After the end credits, the audience gave a standing ovation and thunderous applause (if you know what I mean) for the orchestra and the maestro. The crowd chanted “More!” and they obliged. The encore highlighted even more the sheer amount of talent in that theater. The performance by the Filharmonika Orchestra and acclaimed conductor Gerard Salonga is truly world-class. And paired with this unique and immersive movie experience? It’s a dream come true for every Star Wars fan.
