Top rappers Because and Hev Abi unite in vibing collab track “MINAHALAGAD”

Two of Pinoy rap’s biggest stars, Because and Hev Abi, join forces to deliver an electrifying new track titled “MINAHALAGAD.” Produced by NEXXFRIDAY, this slow-burner is an ear-tweaking and infectious rap track heavy on groove and sonic charisma.

Known for his chart-topping hits such as “Marlboro Black,” “BMW,” and “Sandali,” Because is a stalwart figure in Pinoy rap since he exploded into the scene with his 2018 debut album “Heartbreak SZN.” Preceded by the breakout single “Marlboro Black,” Because carved out a niche for himself with his distinctive style and magnetic presence. Meanwhile, Hev Abi is the current toast of Pinoy rap and is known for his string of breakout singles that includes “Walang Alam” and “Alam Mo Ba Girl” to name a few and has been racking up a sizeable audience since his debut in the rap scene in 2021 and the subsequent release of his independent album in 2022 (“Pautang Ng Pag-ibig”) and its 2022 and 2023 follow up “Sakred Boy” and “Kung Alam Mo Lang” respectively.

“MINAHALAGAD” marks the first-ever collaboration between these two top-tier rappers, setting the stage for an epic collaboration heavy on vibing beats provided by frequent Because-collaborator NEXXFRIDAY. Laid out with Because’s seasoned lyricism and Hev Abi’s fresh perspective, the track is a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of Pinoy rap. Here, Because and Hev Abi exchange bars that go from flowing to rhythmic coupled with a head-bobbing chorus.

For Because, “MINAHALAGAD” follows on the heels of his recent single “BNK,” released earlier this year. Meanwhile, Hev Abi has been making waves with his string of hit singles, including “Burgis,” a collaboration with fellow rapper Flow G.

Both rappers are expected to perform their song for the first time live in Hev Abi’s upcoming concert at the NFT on April 28.

With “MINAHALAGAD,” Because and Hev Abi keeps their positions as frontrunners in the Philippine rap scene hot as well as taking rap collaborations up a notch with their playful yet bombastic approach to the genre.

Released midnight of April 24 by Viva Records, “MINAHALAGAD” is now available on all major streaming platforms.

A Thrilling Musical Experience: Boys Like Girls and We the Kings Captivate Manila

Last weekend, the Araneta Coliseum witnessed an extraordinary musical event as two renowned pop-punk bands, Boys Like Girls and We the Kings, took the stage. The iconic venue was filled to capacity with enthusiastic fans, predominantly from a generation of emo kids, who eagerly awaited the electrifying performances.

Following their triumphant two-night concert at the New Frontier Theater and a captivating solo show in Cebu in October 2022, Boys Like Girls made their grand debut at an arena in the Philippines. Their highly anticipated performance marked a significant milestone in their musical journey.

On the other hand, We the Kings made a remarkable concert comeback after more than a decade. Their return to Manila was met with overwhelming excitement and nostalgia from their dedicated fan base.

The April 20 concert was an unforgettable experience for all attendees, leaving a lasting impression on the music industry and further solidifying the bands’ positions as influential figures in the pop-punk genre.

During the We the Kings set, the audience was energized by the band’s most popular songs, including “Skyway Avenue,” “Secret Valentine,” and “I Feel Alive,” which Travis Clark affectionately dedicated to his daughters. The band also performed “Just Keep Breathing” with a brief excerpt from Coldplay’s “Fix You.” The group playfully performed their most well-known covers, “Wonderwall” by Oasis and “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. They concluded their performance with their hit song, “Check Yes Juliet.”

Boys Like Girls graced the stage with an enthusiastic and thunderous applause from their devoted fans. The band formed in 2005, and it’s no surprise that Boys Like Girls made their set seem so effortless. The switch from upbeat, fast-paced songs like “Love Drunk” and “Five Minutes to Midnight” to warm, heartfelt hits like “Be Your Everything” and “Two Is Better Than One” was smooth. Martin Johnson was cool and confident as he interacted with the crowd and commanded the stage with composure. The band is no stranger to Filipino fans, and Marty also said the band was going to play all the fan favorites. And they did. Boys Like Girls showcased their musical prowess by performing an impressive repertoire of over 30 songs: hits from their self-titled 2007 album to “Love Drunk,” as well as their acclaimed 2012 album, “Crazy World,” and “Sunday at Foxwoods,” released in 2023. The crowd knows the words to almost every song, and singing along with the band and fellow fans is an unforgettable feeling.

As someone who still has their “older” hits in my playlists, I was blown away by the stunning arrangements of their songs. They are incredible live, and it was thrilling to see the band at their best.

FELIP unmasks his emotions with pop-rock single ‘Fake Faces’

Far from the direction of spitting bars and delivering wicked rhymes on his previous EP ‘COM•PLEX’, musician, style icon, and overall rockstar Felip now talks about isolation, fear of betrayal, and finding authenticity with ‘Fake Faces’. He turns to his gritty rock influences – akin to early 2010s emo, alternative, and pop-punk. With hard-hitting lyrics reflective of present-day struggles, ‘Fake Faces’ is sure to be an instant hit to both fans and first-time Felip listeners.

Felip has been delivering landmark achievements as an individual powerhouse artist while being a member of the phenomenal P-pop group SB19. ‘Fake Faces’ is actually a track that was co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter/producer Seann Bowe (Wiz Khalifa, All That Remains, The Veronicas), and produced by internationally-acclaimed producer Hyuk Shin, founder of the 153/Joombas Music Group.

‘Flying out to Malaysia to work on everything from the track to the music and lyric videos was definitely a career highlight; these are big opportunities for me.’ In fact, Felip shares that he did try to keep his nerves at bay during the entire process – as he has the honor and distinction of being the very first Filipino artist to work with Hyuk Shin. In a mere two days, the track was finished and polished, with Felip being ultimately satisfied with the quality of the output.

Upon its release last April 5, ‘Fake Faces’ immediately received merit on the world’s largest and most popular music platforms: the track was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist across the region as well as Spotify Philippines’ Tatak Pinoy and OPM Rising playlists. On Apple Music, it was featured first on the New Releases section, and landed important spotlights on the Absolute OPM Playlist and the New Music Daily playlist. Meanwhile, the official music video for ‘Fake Faces’ trended at number 12 and the lyric video peaked at the 13th spot within the first week of release on Youtube.

So what’s next for Felip? ‘More songs and more events,’ he reveals. With SB19’s PAGTATAG! Tour finale coming up, Felip is committed to producing music in spite of his busy schedule. International fans rejoice as he hopes to penetrate the global scene and play in venues outside the Philippines soon. With plans to continue the group’s tour next week in Dubai and Japan, Felip hopes he will leave an indelible mark in the global spotlight.

On May 11, the guests include Aicelle Santos, Arman Ferrer, Ateneo Chamber Singers, Basil Valdez, Belle Mariano, Bituin Escalante, Dilaw, Jed Madela, John Arcilla, Kakai Bautista, Karylle Tatlonghari, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, Nonie Buencamino, Nyoy Volante, Phi Palmos, Regine Velasquez, Sheila Valderrama-Martinez, Stell of SB19, The Company, and The Ryan Cayabyab Singers.

Returning for the May 12 show are Aicelle Santos, Arman Ferrer, Ateneo Chamber Singers, Basil Valdez, Bituin Escalante, Jed Madela, John Arcilla, Kakai Bautista, Karylle Tatlonghari, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, Nonie Buencamino, Phi Palmos, Sheila Valderrama-Martinez, The Company, and The Ryan Cayabyab Singers. On this date, they are joined by Ben & Ben, Bini, Janella Salvador, Juan Karlos, Julie Anne San Jose, and Vice Ganda.

The artists will be accompanied by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO).

The first birthday tribute of Mr. C was held in 1995 (a year after his 40th birthday) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and produced by Culturtain Musicat Productions, the company of singer Celeste Legaspi and talent manager Girlie Rodis.

ABS-CBN would produce all-star tributes for the composer in the next two decades: “Musicman@50” in 2004 and “Mr. C@60” in 2014.

In 2019, the year Mr. C became a National Artist and a Ramon Magsaysay awardee, the UP College of Medicine honored him through “SOAP Opera (Musika ni Ryan, Medisina ng Bayan”).

Mr. C wrote on Facebook that Celeste Legaspi and Girlie Rodis were insistent on gathering his long-time and newfound friends in the industry for the 2024 tribute. He said, “Hindi pumayag sina Celeste and GR na palampasin itong taon without a musical offering featuring more of my songs.” Culturtain Musicat is spearheading “Gen C”.

The title—which is obviously a play on the first letter of the composer’s last name and in reference to today’s youth—describes the broad appeal of Mr. C.’s genius.

Producer Dr. Melfred L. Hernandez explained, “Gen C is not a demographic group; it’s not about an age bracket but a mindset, a group bound by love for and influence of the music of this National Artist and treasure.”

Producer Aaron Veloso also disclosed, “It’s heartwarming to know that teenagers and people from my generation, together with their parents and grandparents, have been our early and excited ticket buyers.”

The National Artist expressed utmost thanks to all those involved in this project to be directed by Rowell Santiago. Mr. C said, “Hindi siya ganun kadali… Pagmamahal, pagkakaibigan at respeto sa craft ang siyang nangagpapatakbo ng ganitong klaseng proyekto. Isa siyang hiwaga. Pramis.”

“Gen C” is produced by Culturtain Musicat in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Samsung Performing Arts Theater, and Ayala Land, for the benefit of the Philippine General Hospital Medical Foundation.

Sponsors include Metro Pacific Investments Coporation, American Eye Center, Avolution, Ayala Land Premier-Dasmariñas Group, Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant, CMB Film, Joey’s Place, RMA Studio Academy, and Dawns Rack Kasuotan At Iba Pa, with benefactors: MedInfinity, Inc, RAF Forwarding Phils, Inc, Shiphealth and PNB PGH Branch.

“Gen C” showtime is at 7:30 pm. To purchase tickets, visit the Ticketworld website https://premier.ticketworld.com.ph/shows/show.aspx?sh=GENC24
