A #SkinComeTrue Sunday with Song Kang

Song Kang, the 28-year-old Korean actor best known for his roles in dramas Nevertheless, Navillera, Love Alarm, and more, was in Manila for a much-awaited fun meet with Filo Songpyeons.

Presented by Deoproce Philippines and Wilbros Live, the two-hour program showcased Song Kang’s many charms to the delight of those in attendance—with interviews, games, and challenges that allowed the actor to get up close and personal with fans.

Ahead of the fun meet, he also took time to answer questions from the media at an exclusive press conference where we were able to learn a few more things about him!

On what he’s most excited about Filipino fans
Song Kang feels like he improves and develops a lot when he gets to spend time with his fans. He’s curious as to what kind of communication will take place at the fun meet; and, later that night, the actor was brought to tears by the end of the program as he thanked his loyal fans for showering him with so much love.

On being an idol
After the clip of him dancing to NewJeans’ “Hype Boy” went viral, he thinks it’s not within his capabilities to become an idol. He still, however, indulged everyone to a cute little number of the dance during the show!

On what inspires him at work
In the fun meet, Song Kang gamely shared that the film that really got him into acting was Titanic. In the current state of his career, though, he says that whatever movie or drama he watches, he believes there’s always more than one thing he can learn—from the actors going back and forth with each other to how they express their emotions. He always tries to learn from what he sees.

On characters he wants to portray in the future
“It’s not so much a specific character that I would like to play, but my priority is to play characters I enjoy playing,” Song Kang says. He shared how scary and gory his character can become in Sweet Home as he’s currently filming its second season, so he wants to play a happier character next.

On being nicknamed the ‘Son of Netflix’
Song Kang is grateful to be working with the streaming giant, having appeared in several K-Dramas under Netflix. He says he’s been enjoying his work as they’ve become his family and friends.

Needless to say, the event was a huge success as Filo Songpyeons went home with so many great memories with their favorite actor!

DREAM THEATER returning to Manila for Top Of The World Tour at the Big Dome

DREAM THEATER, an American progressive metal rock band composed of James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitars), Jordan Rudess (keyboards), John Myung (bass), and Mike Mangini (drums), will be performing live at the Smart Araneta Coliseum for the “Top of the World Tour” concert on Thursday, May 4, 2023. The show starts at 8 p.m.

In 2019, the two-time Grammy nominated quintet embarked on a sold-out tour in support of both “Distance Over Time” and the 20th anniversary of “Scenes from a Memory” planned to stretch well into the next year. Nevertheless, a Global Pandemic foiled those plans. The musicians found themselves at home with LaBrie in Canada and the rest of the group in the States. As fate would have it, they’d just finished construction on Dream Theater Head Quarter—a combination live recording studio, rehearsal space, control room, equipment storage, and creative hive. It proved to be a Godsend for recording, Pandemic or not.

“The tour had just stopped, and we were on hold,” recalls John. “We weren’t going to sit around and do nothing though. I broke in DTHQ with my solo record and a Liquid Tension Experiment record, so we absolutely felt like we could do a Dream Theater album there. It’s our home, and it sounds great. Looking ahead, I don’t see any reason why we’d go anywhere else to record. After being pent up for so long, we were all just happy to be playing, writing, and doing what we love together. The ideas flowed. Everyone brought his A-game. To a degree, it was influenced by revisiting “Scenes from a Memory” on the last tour as well as incorporating modern elements from Distance Over Time. Despite the state of the world, we were in a positive headspace.”

“It was awesome to have our own place,” Rudess grins. “We didn’t have to deal with the pressure of being in a studio with time limits. I could sit, compose, take my time, and deliver what I feel is some of my best work.”

With LaBrie in Canada, he initially wrote with the band via ZOOM on a monitor in DTHQ. In March 2021, he flew down to New York, quarantined, and recorded his vocals face-to-face with Petrucci. The album ultimately threaded together lean and uncompromising hooks with tried-and-true technical proficiency.

Despite the COVID 19 pandemic the band kept the music going, creating another incredible studio album, highlighted in their current world tour.

On their fifteenth album, A View from the Top of the World, the New York quintet rush forward at full speed again with seven tracks equally steeped in articulate arrangements, groove-laden guitars, and skyscraping melodies. The tracks included in the album are; The Alien (9:32), Answering The Call (7:35), Invisible Monster (6:31), Sleeping Giant (10:05), Transcending Time (6:25), Awaken The Master (9:47), and A View From The Top Of The World (20:24).

The band won a GRAMMY award for “The Alien” in the Best Mental Performance Category, and for almost four decades together, Dream Theater continues to spread their mind-boggling and jaw-dropping performances all over the world.

“We approach every album like it’s our first,” adds LaBrie. “It’s been such a great ride, but we’re not going to stop. These guys are my brothers. We’ve been through ups, downs, and everything in between. To be able to experience this together is beyond words.”

The studio album’s single “Invisible Monster” hinges on a head-nodding mid-tempo trudge offset by cinematic keys, lyrical shredding, and a sweeping refrain. “It’s about how anxiety plagues people,” Petrucci explains. “It’s like there’s an invisible monster beating you. You don’t see it, but it’s haunting you all the time.”

The cinematic “Sleeping Giant” reaches its apex with some signature solo trading between Petrucci and Rudess. It pairs this virtuosity with yet another chantable refrain uplifted by LaBrie.

“Transcending Time” translates “the flow state” into a sonic rollercoaster. Elsewhere, Petrucci employs an 8-string guitar for the first time on the simultaneously crushing and soaring “Awaken The Master.” However, the title track remains not only the crown jewel of the record, but a crown jewel in the band’s catalog.

A 20-minute epic of uncompromising scope, “A View from the Top of the World” highlights the interplay of the group as it twists and turns through lush keys, gravity-defying guitar, brain-numbing rhythms, a moment of heavenly reprieve, and vocal fireworks.

“We went in with the goal of writing a crazy epic,” grins Petrucci. “There’s no ballad on the record, but ‘A View from the Top of the World’ does have a breakdown in the middle. It helps create a story and dynamic flow. I was thinking of people doing dangerous things like surfing 80-foot waves, slacklining across canyons, deep sea diving, scaling Everest, and climbing up mountains free solo. I’m always like, ‘What drives you to do that?’ One wrong move, and you’re dead. Besides being addicted to adrenaline, it makes them feel more alive—perhaps the most alive they’ve ever been. I wrote this along the lines of when you’re on the brink of death, you’ve never felt more alive. Our extreme is being in this band. We’re just not going to die while doing it,” he laughs.

In the end, the view right now is pretty good for Dream Theater.

“When you hear this, I hope you get the very best Dream Theater has to offer,” Rudess concludes. “We tried to build a vital sonic experience. None of us have slowed down. If anything, we’re moving faster.”

“Even with everything going on, this was meant to be positive,” LaBrie elaborates. “We can’t wait to get back out in front of everyone and play these tunes.” – Rick Florino, June 2021

“Music has the power to speak to you on an emotional level,” Petrucci leaves off. “If we’re connecting with listeners emotionally through this record, I don’t think we could ask for anything more.

In all their songs, the listeners can really feel not just only the technicalities of the band but also the passion and the musicianship that they are putting into their odd music, heavy riffs, and rock rigs just to connect to their listeners emotionally.

Their upcoming concert in Manila will be promoted by Ovation Productions with TAPGO TV as official media partner; tickets at P7250, 6750, 5750, 4750, 2750 (plus ticketing charges) are available via Ticketnet.com.ph

Legendary Irish hitmakers THE CORRS returning to the Big Dome this October 2023

The wait is finally over! It’s been more than two decades since platinum selling artists THE CORRS have graced Philippine shores and serenaded their Filipino fans with their now-legendary repertoire, and PULP Live World is proud to announce that they are – indeed – bringing the magic back with a slated two-night production this October 21 and 22, 2023 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Hailed as the most successful “family band” to emerge from the late 90s (consisting of siblings Andrea Corr on lead vocals, violinist/pianist/vocalist Sharon Corr, drummer/vocalist Caroline Corr and guitarist/vocalist Jim Corr) the group is scheduled to fly across the globe to personally deliver their smash hits “Breathless,” “Runaway,” “What Can I Do” and “All The Love in The World” to their legion of Pinoy followers who have since made the group’s songs the soundtrack to their lives, mainly due to The Corrs’ knack for incredibly sincere songwriting and well-crafted overall sound.

Officially formed in 1990 in Dundalk, County Louth Ireland, the group has released seven critically acclaimed studio albums (including their 1995 debut Forgiven, Not Forgotten and their 1997 follow-up Talk On Corners, their most successful album to date…), numerous singles and have sold a whopping collective of 40 million albums worldwide. They have won 24 awards out of 48 nominations over their career, including a BRIT Award for ‘Best International Band’ in 1999 and two Grammy Award nominations in 2001 for the songs “Breathless” and “Rebel Heart.”

Aside from these accomplishments in the industry, the band and its members are also adored worldwide for their philanthropic activities – and have been cited for their efforts and contributions to various causes and charities, alongside the biggest artists in the world… all while preserving their deep connection to their fans worldwide.

Without a doubt, The Corrs’ decade-spanning career of producing numerous hit songs that have marked the hearts and lives of generations of music fans is something no one should miss; definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for serious music fans to revisit a time when songs were made to be nothing short of excellent and endearing.

These upcoming shows will be a full-circle moment The Corrs returns to the very same venue where they last performed in September of 2001. From longtime fans to younger aficionados who may very well be the same age as their children, the music of The Corrs remains timeless – especially to the Filipino people, who now have two chances to relive music history.

USA Basketball Icon Carmelo Anthony named Global Ambassador for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023

USA superstar and 10-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony has become a FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Global Ambassador, with the event tipping off on August 25 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Joining the recently announced Argentine superstar, Luis Scola, and Spain legend Pau Gasol as Global Ambassadors, Carmelo Anthony will help promote the World Cup and take part in activities in the buildup to FIBA’s flagship men’s competition.

“I’ve proudly represented the USA on the world’s largest stages, and the World Cup is the toughest competition in international basketball,” Carmelo said. “It’s all about striking a perfect balance of personnel, talent and having that great chemistry. I’m looking forward to supporting all the players at the World Cup this year and celebrating the sport on a global scale.”

A three-time Olympic gold medalist, a select on the NBA 75 th Anniversary Team, and currently ranked Top 10 on the NBA All-Time Scoring List, Carmelo has led a storied career. At the 2006 World Cup in Japan, Carmelo put on a dynamic, high-scoring display when he led the American team to the podium with a third-place finish and claimed a spot in the All-Star Five.

He averaged 19.9 points per game and poured in 35 of the USA’s points in their come-from-behind 94-85 triumph over Italy in the Group Phase. That performance triggered a three-game run, all-American wins, in which Carmelo buried 12 of 20 attempts from three-point range. Even in their only loss in the competition, a 101-95 Semi-Final defeat to Greece, Carmelo had a game-high 27 points.

The Olympic stage was also where Carmelo shone for the USA as he helped the national team to three undefeated gold medal runs in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and also a bronze medal in 2004.In the U.S. Olympic men’s career record book, he currently is second in the all-time scoring list with 336 points scored, 113 field goals made, 262 field goals attempted, 125 rebounds, 139 3-point field goals attempted, and 71 free throws attempted. Carmelo is also second all-time in three-point field goals made with 57.

Bursting onto the scene in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games at age 20, playing in the 2006 World Cup, and then winning the FIBA AmeriCup in 2007, Carmelo is assured of legendary status in the USA and in international basketball due to his career longevity, prolific scoring, and strong leadership qualities.

Carmelo will be in Manila on February 24 for the Philippines vs. Lebanon World Cup qualifier game of Window 6, soaking up the atmosphere that the Philippines is famous for when it comes to basketball.
