TURNOVER making their Manila return this week at SM Skydome

Pop punk and indie rock both have certainly come a long way and evolved into more inclusive and musically adventurous genres, and without a doubt, Virginia Beach natives TURNOVER are definitely one of the biggest names in the underground scene that are among the catalysts of this evolution.

And the Filipino fans know it, which is why they will be excited to know that the band – consisting of vocalist Austin Getz, bassist Danny Dempsey, guitarist Nick Rayfield and drummer Casey Getz – will be returning to our shores, as part of their Asia Tour 2023. Truly, both longtime followers and fans of underground music with dream-pop, shoegaze and emo sensibilities know that this is the event specifically for them!

The event is produced by PULP LIVE WORLD and co-presented by Skesh Entertainment and will be held at the Skydome, SM City North Edsa. Gates will open at 6pm and show starts 8pm.

Formed in 2009, Turnover’s beginnings were mainly rooted with the release of their self-titled EP in 2011, and a split single release the following year with contemporaries Citizen – but like any other underground/indie rock band, found its true strength in performing live and touring, both with fellow rising stars and established names in the scene, including Angel Dust, Blind Justice, Turnstile and New Found Glory. Though the tours were initially in the United States, Turnover began extending their reach with subsequent rounds in the United Kingdom and ultimately, in Southeast Asia.

To date, the band has five full-length albums under its collective belt, namely: their 2013 emo/pop-punk-inspired debut Magnolia, 2015’s Peripheral Vision (which sonically switched to dream-pop…), 2017’s Good Nature (which Alternative Press cited to be among the year’s most anticipated albums…), 2019’s Altogether and their most recent 2022 outing Myself In The Way.

Concert Round-up: More Than a Farewell Show (Mr. Big Live in Manila 2023)

It’s not often that a rock supergroup could say that they’ve influenced a generation of musicians, but Mr. Big definitely falls under that category. The rock band is known not only for its music versatility and virtuosic musicians, but also for its deep connection with its fans.

On Aug. 9, Mr. Big’s Filipino fans did not miss the chance to see the band live at the SM North Edsa Skydome. The band came back to Manila for the fifth time as part of the Asian leg of their The BIG Finish farewell tour.

Mr. Big’s electrifying set that night started with “Addicted to That Rush,” which is from their debut album released in 1989 and showcases the stunning guitar and bass skills of Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan, respectively. Their set continued with “Take Cover” and “Undertow.”

Vocalist Eric Martin then said that they will be performing the entirety of their 1991 “Lean into It” album. And what better way to introduce one of the best rock albums than performing its first track: “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song).” It’s known as the electric drill song because, well, Gilbert and Sheehan both use electric drills to create their lightning-fast solos. The band played the whole album, including “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” “CDFF-Lucky This Time,” “Just Take My Heart,” “Road to Ruin,” and “To Be with You.”

After their “Lean into It” songs, Mr. Big also performed their hits such as “Big Love,” “Promise Her the Moon,” and a cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World.”

Gilbert and Sheehan also put their unmatched talents on display with their guitar and bass solos. The crowd was mesmerized by Gilbert’s fast and fierce notes and Sheehan’s reverberating bass lines. Each one played their weapon of choice for about six minutes. For this tour, Nick D’Virgilio is stepping in for founding drummer Pat Torpey, who sadly passed away in 2018.

Mr. Big’s set also included “Colorado Bulldog,” “Shy Boy,” and “30 Days in the Hole.”

For their performance of “Good Lovin’,” Sheehan became the vocalist, Martin the bassist, Gilbert the drummer, and D’Virgilio the guitarist. The night ended with a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.”

From their rock and roll hits to their power ballads, the band was exhilarating and was fueled by the energy of the crowd throughout the show.

Before saying goodbye, Sheehan had a message to the band’s Filipino fans: “So many amazing memories coming here to the Philippines and playing for you all these years. Thank you all for coming to our shows and being there with us. It means so much to us. We go around the rest of the world, and they say, ‘Where are the good audiences? What country?’ And we say, ‘Well, Manila. I don’t think you can beat that.'”

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all so much for all these years together. We will never, ever forget you. You will be in our hearts for all time.”

The BIG Finish was more than a farewell show. It was a night of celebration and recognition of the geniuses behind the instruments, as well as the songs we’ve loved for years. It also was a way for the band to say thank you to their fans (comprised mostly talented musicians who learned from and were inspired by one of the best rock bands).

Mr. Big returns to Manila for a farewell concert on August 2023

Simply put, there is no other hard rock supergroup that is more important than Mr. Big.

With over 4 million albums sold worldwide, the band – vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan and original drummer Pat Torpey – has released some of the most beloved pop/rock tunes worldwide, influenced an entire generation of musicians and forever changed the music game by becoming the standard for both technical proficiency and excellent song craftsmanship for 35 years.

Which is why it is a gargantuan – and definitely bittersweet – moment for PULP Live World to announce that the highest-selling supergroup has, indeed, included Manila, Philippines among its final stops on it’s the The BIG Finish farewell tour this August 9th, 2023. Most notably, the band has also formed one of the deepest connections to its worldwide fanbase throughout the decades… especially to the Filipino people.

This will be Mr. Big’s fifth time in Manila, and the band is just as excited to see their fans come out. Though original drummer and co-founder Pat Torpey sadly passed in February of 2018 due to Parkinson’s Disease, the band is proud to announce that they will be joined by longtime friend Nick Virgilio, who Gilbert shares, was “a fan of Pat’s, and is the closest to getting the spirit of the late drummer’s breadth of skill.” Virgilio is now-among the list of the few prominent musicians to have played with Mr. Big, which includes drummers Matt Starr and and guitar superstar Richie Kotzen.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper goodbye if the band didn’t deliver its biggest hits for one last time: “To Be With You,” “Just Take My Heart,” “Green Tinted Sixties Mind,” “Take Cover,” “Wild World,” “Shine,” “Goin’ Where The Wind Blows” are just a few classics in the band’s repertoire, having released 9 full-length studio albums, countless of live albums, singles and rarities from 1989 to the present.

And for this tour, the band will be playing their breakthrough Platinum-selling 1991 album Lean Into It in its entirety. “We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” bassist Sheehan shares, while vocalist Martin adds: “I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as Mr. Big again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band through the years; I love playing with these guys, and if I’m being honest, I don’t want it to ever end – but if this is really the end, then I want us all to have a happy ending together.” Guitarist Paul Gilbert concludes: “Music is like time travel – you can hear something that takes you back to 1992 – and on this tour, I want to give people the opportunity to time-travel… good music is timeless.”

PULP Live World Presents: Mr. Big – The BIG Finish will be held at the SM North Edsa Skydome. They can be purchased at all SM Tickets outlets nationwide and online via http://www.smtickets.com.

Neck Deep returning to Manila this September 2023

This September, kids will once again have a reason to sing, rejoice and jump in the pit because Pulp Live World is bringing back one of the most energetic and infectious bands that has graced our shores. Though the proverbial saying is that the third time’s a charm, there’s absolutely no denying that Welsh pop punk outfit NECK DEEP have consistently brought the goods and exceeded all expectations of their loyal Filipino fans throughout the years.

With fast-paced rhythms, humongous choruses and anthemic tunes that have seemingly become the soundtrack of their ever-growing fanbase here in the country, the five-piece punksters – consisting of vocalist Ben Barlow, guitarists Matt West and Sam Bowden, bassist Seb Barlow and drummer Matt Powles – promise an unforgettable experience as they deliver nothing but “Beautiful Madness.” Formed in Wrexham Wales in 2012, the band – which started out simply as a fun project that supported similar artists in the UK – rose to international acclaim after years of hard work on the road, touring the United States and ultimately, landing spots on the Vans Warped Tour in the US.

Influenced by groups like Blink-182, New Found Glory, Green Day and The Descendents, the group combined a modern flavor and their trademark sincere lyricism and won-over fans of the genre in no time. Currently, Neck Deep has four studio albums under their collective belt, namely their 2014 debut Wishful Thinking, 2015’s Life’s Not Out To Get You, 2017’s The Peace and The Panic and the 2020 release All Distortions Are Intentional. And just this year, the band released two fiery singles that fans completely dug: the race-to-the-finish “Heartbreak of the Century” (released in February) and their most recent “Meet You There 2.0” a collaboration with UK pop-punk outfit Busted, released last May. Two more reasons to get hyped and tell all your friends.

So there is no need to ask “Where Do We Go When We Go?” because Neck Deep goes full circle as they return to the same venue they’ve played both in 2016 and 2018: The Skydome at SM North Edsa.

The show happens on September 22nd, 2023, but diehard fans will be stoked to know that tickets go on sale as early as July 31st through SM Tickets outlets nationwide and can be purchased at www.smtickets.com. So don’t miss out on this highly awaited pop-punk spectacle – you know it’s “Worth It!”
