Stars gather on May 11 and 12 for Mr. Ryan Cayabyab’s “Gen C” birthday musical tribute

The biggest names in Philippine recording, TV, cinema and stage are converging at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater on May 11 and 12, 2024 for “Gen C” — a musical offering in honor of National Artist Ryan Cayabyab’s 70th birthday.

Topnotch artists are set to perform and collaborate with Maestro Ryan Cayayab a.k.a. Mr. C. for this once-in-a-lifetime extravaganza

On May 11, the guests include Aicelle Santos, Arman Ferrer, Ateneo Chamber Singers, Basil Valdez, Belle Mariano, Bituin Escalante, Dilaw, Jed Madela, John Arcilla, Kakai Bautista, Karylle Tatlonghari, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, Nonie Buencamino, Nyoy Volante, Phi Palmos, Regine Velasquez, Sheila Valderrama-Martinez, Stell of SB19, The Company, and The Ryan Cayabyab Singers.

Returning for the May 12 show are Aicelle Santos, Arman Ferrer, Ateneo Chamber Singers, Basil Valdez, Bituin Escalante, Jed Madela, John Arcilla, Kakai Bautista, Karylle Tatlonghari, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, Nonie Buencamino, Phi Palmos, Sheila Valderrama-Martinez, The Company, and The Ryan Cayabyab Singers. On this date, they are joined by Ben & Ben, Bini, Janella Salvador, Juan Karlos, Julie Anne San Jose, and Vice Ganda.

The artists will be accompanied by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO).

The first birthday tribute of Mr. C was held in 1995 (a year after his 40th birthday) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and produced by Culturtain Musicat Productions, the company of singer Celeste Legaspi and talent manager Girlie Rodis.

ABS-CBN would produce all-star tributes for the composer in the next two decades: “Musicman@50” in 2004 and “Mr. C@60” in 2014.

In 2019, the year Mr. C became a National Artist and a Ramon Magsaysay awardee, the UP College of Medicine honored him through “SOAP Opera (Musika ni Ryan, Medisina ng Bayan”).

Mr. C wrote on Facebook that Celeste Legaspi and Girlie Rodis were insistent on gathering his long-time and newfound friends in the industry for the 2024 tribute. He said, “Hindi pumayag sina Celeste and GR na palampasin itong taon without a musical offering featuring more of my songs.” Culturtain Musicat is spearheading “Gen C”.

The title—which is obviously a play on the first letter of the composer’s last name and in reference to today’s youth—describes the broad appeal of Mr. C.’s genius.

Producer Dr. Melfred L. Hernandez explained, “Gen C is not a demographic group; it’s not about an age bracket but a mindset, a group bound by love for and influence of the music of this National Artist and treasure.”

Producer Aaron Veloso also disclosed, “It’s heartwarming to know that teenagers and people from my generation, together with their parents and grandparents, have been our early and excited ticket buyers.”

The National Artist expressed utmost thanks to all those involved in this project to be directed by Rowell Santiago. Mr. C said, “Hindi siya ganun kadali… Pagmamahal, pagkakaibigan at respeto sa craft ang siyang nangagpapatakbo ng ganitong klaseng proyekto. Isa siyang hiwaga. Pramis.”

“Gen C” is produced by Culturtain Musicat in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Samsung Performing Arts Theater, and Ayala Land, for the benefit of the Philippine General Hospital Medical Foundation.

Sponsors include Metro Pacific Investments Coporation, American Eye Center, Avolution, Ayala Land Premier-Dasmariñas Group, Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant, CMB Film, Joey’s Place, RMA Studio Academy, and Dawns Rack Kasuotan At Iba Pa, with benefactors: MedInfinity, Inc, RAF Forwarding Phils, Inc, Shiphealth and PNB PGH Branch.

“Gen C” showtime is at 7:30 pm. To purchase tickets, visit the Ticketworld website https://premier.ticketworld.com.ph/shows/show.aspx?sh=GENC24

He worked as an arranger on the opening numbers of the 2022 and 2023 Tony Awards as well as the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards for Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, with whom he has collaborated closely since 2012. Rauhala has toured the world since 2014 as the music director for Jeremy Jordan, the Tony-nominated star of Broadway’s Newsies, and in 2020, he was named ‘Best Musical Director’ at the Broadway World Cabaret Awards.

Bruno Major returning to Manila this August 2023

It’s been a long time coming.

After five years, Bruno Major is returning to the Philippines as part of the Asian leg of his Tour of Planet Earth 2023.

The British singer-songwriter made his Philippine debut at Karpos Live in 2018 and was initially set to come back in 2020 to perform at the then canceled Wanderland Music & Arts Festival. In that same year, he released his sophomore album, To Let A Good Thing Die and by the looks of it, maybe the third album this 2023 as he just released a new single, We Were Never Really Friends.

There’s been a lot of new music yet to be heard live and lucky for us, we’ll be charmed by it all soon.

Bruno Major quickly caught the spotlight when he completed his 12-track debut album, A Song For Every Moon, after releasing a song every full moon, a.k.a. every month. It was a very unconventional and personal project for Major but was a testament to his dedication, talent, creativity, and overall brand as an artist.

The whole astronomical concept to his brand is so cohesive, his album covers have well thought out meanings and stories to tell as well, as very intricately designed by Rob Shuttleworth.

When it comes to Major’s music, you can tell that he’s an old-fashioned romantic. The mixture of R&B, soul and jazz melodies with vulnerable, straight to the point lyrics and soothing vocals runs through his entire catalog. He is the soundtrack of falling in and out of love and finding beauty in spite of it all.

If there’s something we remember about being in a Bruno Major show, it feels exactly like that–a confident charming crooner singing delicately about love with the audience clutching their chests as he pours his soul and emotion on stage.

“The beauty of Major’s music can truly be found in its simplicity,” the L.A. Times says and we couldn’t agree more.

Bruno Major live in Manila is happening on August 15, 2023 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit, Makati.

Staying true to its promise, Ayala Land initiated the completion of the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati to further enrich Filipino lives. Makati is Ayala Land’s flagship estate that promotes a healthy balance of live, work, and play. While one of its nodes which houses the theater, Circuit Makati, is committed to being the center of arts, culture, and entertainment. The new theater was meticulously engineered to wow audiences of all ages. Upon entering the ground floor, guests can take a scenic route through the long escalators to the fifth floor, where the ticket outlet is stationed. The high ceilings and windows exude a feeling of grandness, while featuring various artworks—including an artwork by Jaime Zobel de Ayala at the main hall.

After the show, guests can drop by the gift shop on the third floor for exclusive merchandise that they can keep as memorabilia of their one-of-a-kind theater experience. Meet and greet opportunities can be held in the Cua Patrons Lounge located on the seventh floor.

In addition, Ayala Land made investments to ensure the safety of performers by installing Harlequin© sprung floors—a special type of flooring that reduces the risk of dancers from getting injured through impact, slipping, or falling. In fact, the Samsung Performing Arts Theater is proud to be the only performance stage in the country to date that has the state-of-the-art Harlequin© sprung floors. Moreover, this theater has its own Rehearsal Hall. “The Samsung Performing Arts Theater was thoughtfully designed to bring arts and culture to the forefront for the enjoyment and enrichment of many Filipinos.
