Finally! ALANIS MORISSETTE heading back to Manila, set for AUG. 2023 at MOA Arena

This is it, Philippines!

Alanis Morissette, Canadian-American singer-songwriter, will finally perform her special one-night concert at the Mall of Asia Arena on August 1, 2023, to celebrate the 28th anniversary of her most recognized and iconic album, Jagged Little Pill.

Her upcoming show in Manila is part of her tour celebrating the supposedly 25th anniversary of her album and was originally scheduled to take place at the MOA Arena on April 2020 but it was moved on December 2021, and November 2022, the shows have been postponed three times because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jagged Little Pill captured the zeitgeist of the mid-’90s by crossing the line between Gen-X cynicism and self-realization. It was pitched somewhere between glitzy mainstream pop and angst-ridden alternative rock. The album, which produced a string of Top 10 songs like “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” and “Ironic,”. It also won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Making the 21-year-old Morissette the youngest performer to ever win the prestigious honor, the album was ranked number 69 on Rolling Stone’s list of “the 500 best albums of all time.”

Morissette won a total of seven Grammys and was nominated fourteen times. Included among her finest songs are You Learn, Head Over Feet, All I Really Want, Thank You, Mary Jane, Uninvited, Perfect, Forgiven, Right Through You, Wake Up, and many more.

And she has been one of the most influential singer-songwriter musicians in contemporary music since 1995. Her deeply expressive music and performances have received widespread praise from critics. Jagged Little Pill, Morissette’s debut album from 1995, was followed by nine more eclectic and acclaimed albums. She has composed music for theatrical releases and appeared in films both big and small. Aside from entertainment, she is a strong advocate for female empowerment, as well as spiritual, psychological, and physical well-being. Alanis Morissette launched Conversation with Alanis Morissette in 2016, a monthly podcast featuring conversations with a variety of revered authors, doctors, educators, and therapists on a wide range of psychosocial topics ranging from spirituality to developmentalism to art.

On December 5, 2019, “JAGGED LITTLE PILL” the musical made its Broadway debut at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City. The show was nominated for fifteen Tony Awards and won 2 Tony Awards at the 2021 ceremony. In July of 2020, Alanis released her ninth studio album, Such Pretty Forks In The Road, to rave reviews. In August of 2021, Alanis kicked off her sold out world tour celebrating 25 years of Jagged Little Pill. The tour became the #1 female-fronted tour from 2021 and one of the Top Worldwide Tours of 2021 selling over 500,000 tickets. Alanis also stars in Fox’s sitcom, “The Great North,” which has returned for season 3 in 2022.

Alanis Morissette’s upcoming concert in Manila is presented by Ovation Productions with TAPGO.TV as media partner.

DREAM THEATER returning to Manila for Top Of The World Tour at the Big Dome

DREAM THEATER, an American progressive metal rock band composed of James LaBrie (vocals), John Petrucci (guitars), Jordan Rudess (keyboards), John Myung (bass), and Mike Mangini (drums), will be performing live at the Smart Araneta Coliseum for the “Top of the World Tour” concert on Thursday, May 4, 2023. The show starts at 8 p.m.

In 2019, the two-time Grammy nominated quintet embarked on a sold-out tour in support of both “Distance Over Time” and the 20th anniversary of “Scenes from a Memory” planned to stretch well into the next year. Nevertheless, a Global Pandemic foiled those plans. The musicians found themselves at home with LaBrie in Canada and the rest of the group in the States. As fate would have it, they’d just finished construction on Dream Theater Head Quarter—a combination live recording studio, rehearsal space, control room, equipment storage, and creative hive. It proved to be a Godsend for recording, Pandemic or not.

“The tour had just stopped, and we were on hold,” recalls John. “We weren’t going to sit around and do nothing though. I broke in DTHQ with my solo record and a Liquid Tension Experiment record, so we absolutely felt like we could do a Dream Theater album there. It’s our home, and it sounds great. Looking ahead, I don’t see any reason why we’d go anywhere else to record. After being pent up for so long, we were all just happy to be playing, writing, and doing what we love together. The ideas flowed. Everyone brought his A-game. To a degree, it was influenced by revisiting “Scenes from a Memory” on the last tour as well as incorporating modern elements from Distance Over Time. Despite the state of the world, we were in a positive headspace.”

“It was awesome to have our own place,” Rudess grins. “We didn’t have to deal with the pressure of being in a studio with time limits. I could sit, compose, take my time, and deliver what I feel is some of my best work.”

With LaBrie in Canada, he initially wrote with the band via ZOOM on a monitor in DTHQ. In March 2021, he flew down to New York, quarantined, and recorded his vocals face-to-face with Petrucci. The album ultimately threaded together lean and uncompromising hooks with tried-and-true technical proficiency.

Despite the COVID 19 pandemic the band kept the music going, creating another incredible studio album, highlighted in their current world tour.

On their fifteenth album, A View from the Top of the World, the New York quintet rush forward at full speed again with seven tracks equally steeped in articulate arrangements, groove-laden guitars, and skyscraping melodies. The tracks included in the album are; The Alien (9:32), Answering The Call (7:35), Invisible Monster (6:31), Sleeping Giant (10:05), Transcending Time (6:25), Awaken The Master (9:47), and A View From The Top Of The World (20:24).

The band won a GRAMMY award for “The Alien” in the Best Mental Performance Category, and for almost four decades together, Dream Theater continues to spread their mind-boggling and jaw-dropping performances all over the world.

“We approach every album like it’s our first,” adds LaBrie. “It’s been such a great ride, but we’re not going to stop. These guys are my brothers. We’ve been through ups, downs, and everything in between. To be able to experience this together is beyond words.”

The studio album’s single “Invisible Monster” hinges on a head-nodding mid-tempo trudge offset by cinematic keys, lyrical shredding, and a sweeping refrain. “It’s about how anxiety plagues people,” Petrucci explains. “It’s like there’s an invisible monster beating you. You don’t see it, but it’s haunting you all the time.”

The cinematic “Sleeping Giant” reaches its apex with some signature solo trading between Petrucci and Rudess. It pairs this virtuosity with yet another chantable refrain uplifted by LaBrie.

“Transcending Time” translates “the flow state” into a sonic rollercoaster. Elsewhere, Petrucci employs an 8-string guitar for the first time on the simultaneously crushing and soaring “Awaken The Master.” However, the title track remains not only the crown jewel of the record, but a crown jewel in the band’s catalog.

A 20-minute epic of uncompromising scope, “A View from the Top of the World” highlights the interplay of the group as it twists and turns through lush keys, gravity-defying guitar, brain-numbing rhythms, a moment of heavenly reprieve, and vocal fireworks.

“We went in with the goal of writing a crazy epic,” grins Petrucci. “There’s no ballad on the record, but ‘A View from the Top of the World’ does have a breakdown in the middle. It helps create a story and dynamic flow. I was thinking of people doing dangerous things like surfing 80-foot waves, slacklining across canyons, deep sea diving, scaling Everest, and climbing up mountains free solo. I’m always like, ‘What drives you to do that?’ One wrong move, and you’re dead. Besides being addicted to adrenaline, it makes them feel more alive—perhaps the most alive they’ve ever been. I wrote this along the lines of when you’re on the brink of death, you’ve never felt more alive. Our extreme is being in this band. We’re just not going to die while doing it,” he laughs.

In the end, the view right now is pretty good for Dream Theater.

“When you hear this, I hope you get the very best Dream Theater has to offer,” Rudess concludes. “We tried to build a vital sonic experience. None of us have slowed down. If anything, we’re moving faster.”

“Even with everything going on, this was meant to be positive,” LaBrie elaborates. “We can’t wait to get back out in front of everyone and play these tunes.” – Rick Florino, June 2021

“Music has the power to speak to you on an emotional level,” Petrucci leaves off. “If we’re connecting with listeners emotionally through this record, I don’t think we could ask for anything more.

In all their songs, the listeners can really feel not just only the technicalities of the band but also the passion and the musicianship that they are putting into their odd music, heavy riffs, and rock rigs just to connect to their listeners emotionally.

Their upcoming concert in Manila will be promoted by Ovation Productions with TAPGO TV as official media partner; tickets at P7250, 6750, 5750, 4750, 2750 (plus ticketing charges) are available via Ticketnet.com.ph

120 MINUTES OF MINHO MAGIC

A sea of cheers and pearl aqua light sticks filled the MOA Arena last January 28 to herald the fan meet of SHINee member, Choi Min-ho. Better known as Minho, the South Korean singer, screen actor and songwriter entertained his adoring fans for over 120 minutes with music, missions and must-know new trivia about the man of the hour.

“It’s been a while and it’s making my heart flutter”, shares the heartthrob. And the years not seeing Minho onstage was evident as his fans were very receptive to his stage antics together with local host, Sam Oh. From wearing a barong, the recreating scenes from various K-dramas, to fan ticket raffles and more, how fortunate indeed were those present at the venue to witness the evening’s ceremonies. Of which he blushes, “I’m so excited for this first fan meet in the Philippines”.

Beyond the games, Minho eagerly shared his solo tracks onstage. Mixing his palpable energy and engaging lyricism, the SHINee member talked about his tracks – namely “Heartbreak” and “Runaway” and how he is proud performing them for admirers of his music. “I’m very happy that the first fan meet outside Seoul is in the Philippines”. And with that, we can feel his warmth towards the loving Shawols present. Assuring the fandom’s request for a possible return show with his groupmates to happen again in Manila.

After the 2 hour program, we can safely say that it truly was a lucky choice for his fans to see him live.

Ben&Ben marks monumental milestone with Homecoming Concert this weekend

2022 has been a massive year for Ben&Ben. After headlining a successful North American tour and securing the #1 spot on Spotify Wrapped’s most streamed local group in the Philippines list for the 3rd year in a row, the nine-piece act was recently announced as a performer at the Clockenflap: Hong Kong’s Music & Arts Festival—solid proof of their growing popularity overseas.

To celebrate a year of record-breaking achievements and monumental milestones, the multi-awarded band is ready to make headlines once again with their Homecoming Concert, happening on December 18, 2022 (Sunday) at the SMDC Festival Grounds.

Marking their return to Manila with their biggest concert yet, Ben&Ben promises to show gratitude to the fans who have supported their music journey since day one.

“To match that sense of gratitude, we wanted to mount our largest show yet, with our longest set, most ambitious performance ideas, and simply the best of what we’ve made through the years,” the chart-topping Filipino group shares in a statement. “We are most excited about bringing this show, finally, to our Liwanag, because it had definitely been a long journey with a lot of hard work to get here.”

Concept-wise, Ben&Ben’s Homecoming Concert 2022 is centered around the feeling of home: as a place, idea, or person of comfort, or as a reassuring gesture of security and intimacy. As the Paninindigan Kita hitmakers put it, the outdoor music show is also about coming home to each other and being home to each other.

“We’ve always likened how each piece of music we make is a little gift that our listeners have allowed into their lives, and how they have likewise felt the comfort of home through our songs, so it’s in that give and take and sharing of the feeling of home that we ultimately want to highlight for this show.”

In terms of set list, the acclaimed band takes pride in finding a perfect balance of impact, energy, emotion, and storytelling. “To do this, we imagined ourselves as audience members and tried to approximate what might feel best after a certain song or what might be the most sensible in terms of managing energy for both them and us throughout the lengthy set,” says Ben&Ben. “We feel the set we eventually came up with is the perfect rollercoaster — one that keeps you hooked and engaged the whole time without lingering too long on the highs or the lows.”

The Homecoming Concert will also feature guest performances from artists who shared their incomparable talent to make their sophomore album, Pebble House. Vol.1 an incredible piece of music history: from Filipina neo-soul artist KZ Tandingan to young alt-rock visionaries Zild and Juan Karlos.

Tickets to Ben&Ben Homecoming Concert 2022 can be purchased via the ovationtickets.com and ticketnet.com.ph. This event is presented by Ovation Productions, Ben&Ben Music Productions, Sony Music Philippines, and Tap Go; brought to you by SMART Telecommunications Inc., and Angkas, in cooperation with Pru Life UK.
