Get to know more about joan’s debut album, superglue

Acclaimed alt pop duo joan announce details of their long awaited debut album superglue, out April 19th, 2023 via Photo Finish Records. The twelve-track full length is over three years in the making, following their beloved EPs portra, cloudy, hi and bye, and is an existential journey influenced by the duo’s recent transition into fatherhood. joan explain: “It’s totally wrecked our world and we both have been going through a lot of the same growth that comes alongside being a parent. It’s changed our whole process of writing, and way more than just like having a kid and making every song about them. It’s made us think more about who we are as people, what we want to put into the world and what we want to get out of it, just reflecting on life way more than I think we ever have.

This album as a whole is about the past and the present happening at the same time, it’s about dreams for the future and hoping for a better tomorrow but missing yesterday. It’s by far the best and most meaningful music we’ve ever made, it has something for everyone, and we hope it means something to you too.”

To accompany the news they’ve also shared the record’s second single and video ‘flowers’, the last song joan wrote for the album which became one of their personal favorites. The highly emotive and nostalgic narrative discusses how time is fleeting and how people grow and change, paired with wistful acoustic guitar riffs under cinematic synths and heartfelt melodies. The accompanying video shows captures joan’s riveting performance against bright hues of yellow.

The band share “I remember running around the streets of my best friend’s neighborhood after midnight, skipping around from friend to friends house. I remember rushing to my friend’s house after school to rehearse our new songs in his garage. I remember driving around town after the sun went down just because we could. you make so many memories in those formative years. You never think to yourself, “this won’t last forever”. but then you grow. It happens slow – years go by, seasons change. That’s just life. If you’re lucky, some of those people stick around. but for a lot of us, you’re left asking, “why don’t we talk anymore?”. That’s what this song is to us.”

Rounding out a magical eight months of new music from joan will be the second EP, bye, set to hit next month. bye, conversely to hi, focuses on the sadness and anger of a relationship’s end.

joan, about ‘right back’ say, “this song is about not knowing what you had until you left, but they knew you’d be back. they knew they were the best you could ever get, so they waited for you. thank god for strong people that wait patiently on the wonderers, who knows where we’d be without them”

joan’s new chapter ‘wave era’ saw new singles from two EPs landing on the first Thursday of each month, soundtracking 2021 with their trademark alt-pop bops, tinged with the sweetest hint of 90’s R&B influences. Titled hi and bye, joan explain “after we released “cloudy/partly cloudy”, we got straight to work, writing so many new songs. we found that the songs were naturally falling in two different camps. so, we decided rather than trying to force them to work together, it would be more interesting to release two ep’s over the course of the year. welcome to the wave era – here comes a new joan song each month through the end of the year :)”. The first of these two EPs, hi is out TODAY!

joan (Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford) have spent the past few years building their musical empire, single by single, tour date by tour date, with the past two years being landmarks for them; their debut EP, 2019’s portra, and last year’s EP cloudy have been streamed well over 90 million times, with over a million listeners a month across streaming platforms.

The guys spent much of 2019 on the road with major US and international tours supporting the likes of The Aces, COIN, Bloc Party and Jeremy Zucker, as well as playing to fans across Asia with headline shows and festivals in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. Early 2020 saw them playing to sold out crowds across the US on their first headline tour, including having to add additional shows in LA to accommodate ticket demand. Their virtual cloudy release show in August 2020 boasted thousands of ticket sales from fans who tuned into their livestream.

joan kick off ‘the wave era’ with new single ‘so good’

About ‘so good’, Steven and Alan explain that the song is “about feeling like you’re meant to be with someone who just walked in the room. it’s about being around someone that just makes your life feel good. it’s about wishing that person was there your whole life, because you didn’t realize how good it could be. here’s hoping you have that someone, or hoping you find them soon”.

The ‘wave era’ will see new singles from the two EPs landing on the first Thursday of each month, soundtracking the rest of 2021 with their trademark alt-pop bops, tinged with the sweetest hint of 90’s R&B influences. joan add “after we released “cloudy/partly cloudy”, we got straight to work, writing so many new songs. we found that the songs were naturally falling in two different camps. so, we decided rather than trying to force them to work together, it would be more interesting to release two ep’s over the course of the year. welcome to the wave era – here comes a new joan song each month through the end of the year :)”
