Kim Seon-ho Returns to Manila for Love to Meet Our Good Boy Fan Meet

Filipino Seonhohadas had been eagerly waiting for Kim Seon-ho to come back after his first fan meet in January. Thanks to clothing and lifestyle brand Bench, the South Korean actor met his fans during a sweet and fun “Love to Meet Our Good Boy” fan meet at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on July 22.

When Seon-ho took the stage, host Robi Domingo asked the fans to greet the actor with “mahal kita” (in three languages!). The “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” and “Start-Up” actor replied with “mahal ko din kayo,” to the delight of his fans. He walked across the stage so that Seonhohadas could see him up close and take photos of him. Robi also asked Seon-ho to repeat a couple of lines from his latest project “The Childe,” an action/thriller film. Seon-ho obliged and said, “Ngumiti ka naman dyan. Ako’ng bahala sa’yo.”

At one point, Robi asked Seon-ho, “How do you feel?” The K-drama actor replied with “Masaya.” And for the rest of the night, both the actor and his fans made each other smile. It was such a delight to watch.
The first part of the fan meet was a short interview, and photos of Seon-ho were displayed on screen as the actor talked about his projects, including “The Childe” and “Touching the Void,” a play based on a 1988 book. Seon-ho also said he couldn’t choose a favorite actor because there are a lot of great ones in the industry. Because of these senior actors, others could learn from them and become better actors. Seon-ho is known as a versatile actor and his signature dimples. He shared that he was insecure about his dimples when he was young because some people made him feel like they were an insecurity, but now, he’s learned to appreciate them.

They started the games with Seon-ho as the only participant. He played “Spot the Difference,” and he got all items correctly. He even complimented the production team for doing a great job with the photos.
With the second game, three lucky fans went on stage to play “Pictionary” with Seon-ho. The actor drew, while the fans guessed what they were. All of the fans guessed them correctly, and as a prize, they got to keep Seon-ho’s signed drawings. Seon-ho seemed shy and very down-to-earth, and interactions and conversations were easy with him.
The third game was “Pinoy Henyo,” and Seon-ho guessed all the words flashed on screen. Like with the previous game, all the words were related to the actor’s projects.

Seon-ho earlier mentioned that he wanted to try halo-halo, and for lunch that day, he was able to try the Filipino dessert and also lechon. He talked about Korean food and his favorite: tteokbokki. So for the next part of the fan meet, he cooked tteokbokki, and one fan was able to try what he made.

For the last game, three fans were picked to share a scene re-enactment with Seon-ho, bringing extra kilig to the night.
Before the fan meet ended, Filipino Seonhohadas prepared a fan project for the actor. They gave heartfelt messages of gratitude to the actor, who have made their lives even better in various ways.

“All of your warm welcome, support, and love for me make me super happy. Thank you so much,” he said through an interpreter.
“It was really unexpected that I would cook tteokbokki in front of a lot of people, play games, draw, and have a lot of conversations with the fans. We are one big family, and I’m so happy to be part of this family. I would also like to sincerely express my gratitude to the Bench team for making this possible and for the unforgettable memories with my fans.”

Even with such a huge venue, the fan meet felt intimate as Seon-ho took every opportunity to be close with his Seonhohadas. “I will cherish today as an unforgettable memory. Salamat po,” the actor said.

As for his fans, there was no doubt that meeting their favorite Good Boy was also an unforgettable memory for them.

WATCH: Rise High’s latest single, Tinig ng Pag-ibig, inspires and empowers

Imagine a song with lyrics so moving, so heartfelt and riveting that it actually empowers its listeners to affirmative action.

That’s the magic behind Rise High’s latest single, Tinig ng Pag-Ibig, which had a successful launch last Tuesday, July 25, at 19 East.

While some bands are relentlessly driven in their pursuit of fame and fortune, Rise High aims for a far nobler and loftier dream of driving home their message of love, acceptance and transcendence through their original music.

Rise High during their recent Wish Bus guesting last week

By doing so, it’s not surprising how their core truth resonates strongly among their devout fans and listeners, whose expanding demographic continues to amaze the group.

Lead vocalist Lura Angeles summed it up succinctly when she explained the story behind the band’s name. She said, “It’s all about taking second chances. All of us have our struggles, we always have battles to face, and there are no shortcuts. You just have to face it head on. You just have to be headstrong. And that’s how you rise high!”

No strangers in the band circuit, Rise High is the brainchild of guitarist, singer and band leader Edil Luyon, who assembled the earlier incarnation of the band around 2016. Its current members are Edil Luyon (vocals, guitar and bandleader), Lura Angeles-Luyon (vocals), Philippe Arriola (bass), Obet Luzon (keyboards), Joseph Rivera (drums) and Dave Erin (guitar).

Rise High during their recent launch at 19 East

Two years earlier, the group, then called Ecoustic Soul, honed their musical chops by playing pop covers for events, including weddings, parties and corporate events.

Even then, Edil already had a clear vision of the musical avenue he wanted to tread. He narrates, “Even before 2014, I already had this big dream of creating our own music, our own compositional landscape so to speak, and I knew in my heart what our primary message would inspire and drive us.”

He also credits the band’s current manager for instilling in them the life-changing impact of the mantra “live your dream,” which the band members have always used as a guidepost in their day to day lives and work ethic.

Some of his first compositions include Iyo, I Surrender, May Bukas Ang Bukas, and Dakila, an ode brimming with spiritual praise and fervor.

Rise High at 19 East

A cursory peek at their Spotify playlist also reveals a goldmine of singles and EPs including Bumalik Sa Simula, Lala Land and Magsasayaw, which incidentally also happens to be the soundtrack for the feel-good Net25 sitcom, Good Will, which stars David Chua, Devon Seron, Raymond Bagatsing, Smokey Manaloto, Meg Imperial, Kat Galang, Regine Angeles and many others.

Asked about Edil’s compositional genius and why most of his compositions always seem to revolve around romantic relationships, Philippe, the band’s bassist teases, “Retired playboy kasi!” “

Hindi retired! Chismoso lang!” Edil retorts, alluding to his penchant for eavesdropping on his bandmates’ phone conversations with their ‘significant others.’ True enough, a good bulk of their songs run the gamut from unrequited love, to moving on after a bad breakup, or even finding love the second time around — songs that strongly impact millennials and GenZs.

Though primarily rooted in the local band scene, perhaps by sheer luck, Edil always manages to have one foot in the showbiz world, having done arranging chores and session work for Regine Velasquez, Vice Ganda, Christian Bautista, JM de Guzman, Jaya, Nina, Sheree Vidal, Jed Madela, Jayson Sia, Jeffrey Hidalgo, Arnee Hidalgo, Stevie Woods, Aldrin Nolasco, Emanuel Quibilan, and the late Keith Martin.

Rise High band leader/guitarist and vocalist Edil Luyon

He has also done film scoring for indie movies including director Dexter Cayanes’ Pangaris and Ang Musa, and Vic Acedillo, Jr.’s Ang Nerseri. Edil also feels strongly about getting the late senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago’s nod for his out-of-the-box concept for her last political jingle.

With his bubbly personality and infectious charm, it’s not too farfetched if Edil gets an overload of showbiz assignments in due time.

He nonchalantly shrugs, “It’s not really a top priority for now, but it would be great if some of our original songs get used for a movie or teleserye. Now, THAT would be something!”

Rise High vocalist Lura Angeles-Luyon

With the constantly evolving local music landscape, Edil and his bandmates take great pride in being indie artists, who rely mainly on music-sharing platforms for their promo and marketing.

“For the most part, we’ve been relying on Spotify, but we plan to invade TikTok soon,” Edil reveals. “That’s where the numbers are.”

And speaking of numbers, Edil feels overwhelmed with the fully capacity crowd at their 19 East album launch, which also featured fast-rising artists Davey Langit, Abby Clutario, Emanuel Quibilan, Bill and the Judiths, Ella Guevarra, with the special participation of Edil’s kids: Felix Ryan (drums) and Krie Nivela (bass) and their singer/guitarist friend Yuriel Arcay, collectively called The Lucays.

Also spotted in the audience was the Good Will cast—David Chua, Raymond Bagatsing, Meg Imperial, Regine Angeles—together with the show’s producer, respected journalist and talk show host Korina Sanchez.

Edil with special guest and good friend, South Border guitarist Janno Queyquep

Edil adds, “Our album launch wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of 19 East’s top honcho Wowee Posadas, who so graciously encouraged, supported and believed in our music.”

Also sharing the stage spotlight was South Border lead guitarist and session ace Janno Queyquep, whose tasteful and dazzling fingerboard prowess had always inspired Edil, himself a consummate soloist and showman.

“It’s always an honor to play with Janno, who I’ve always looked up to not just as a guitar god and mentor, but also a good friend who offers very sensible musical and songwriting nuggets of wisdom.”

Guest performers The Lucays (Felix Ryan, drums and Krie Nivela, bass)

Onstage, Edil’s longtime dream came to fruition as he traded blistering solos with his guitar hero, while tightly locked in on the band’s propulsive groove.

If rain is a sign of good luck, the relentless downpour brought in by Typhoon Egay that same night could very well be a clear indication of even better days ahead for Edil and his cohorts.

It’s going to be a busy August for Rise High as they gear up for a series of bar tours in the Quezon City area, aside from radio guestings and other promotional gigs.

Mr. Big returns to Manila for a farewell concert on August 2023

Simply put, there is no other hard rock supergroup that is more important than Mr. Big.

With over 4 million albums sold worldwide, the band – vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan and original drummer Pat Torpey – has released some of the most beloved pop/rock tunes worldwide, influenced an entire generation of musicians and forever changed the music game by becoming the standard for both technical proficiency and excellent song craftsmanship for 35 years.

Which is why it is a gargantuan – and definitely bittersweet – moment for PULP Live World to announce that the highest-selling supergroup has, indeed, included Manila, Philippines among its final stops on it’s the The BIG Finish farewell tour this August 9th, 2023. Most notably, the band has also formed one of the deepest connections to its worldwide fanbase throughout the decades… especially to the Filipino people.

This will be Mr. Big’s fifth time in Manila, and the band is just as excited to see their fans come out. Though original drummer and co-founder Pat Torpey sadly passed in February of 2018 due to Parkinson’s Disease, the band is proud to announce that they will be joined by longtime friend Nick Virgilio, who Gilbert shares, was “a fan of Pat’s, and is the closest to getting the spirit of the late drummer’s breadth of skill.” Virgilio is now-among the list of the few prominent musicians to have played with Mr. Big, which includes drummers Matt Starr and and guitar superstar Richie Kotzen.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper goodbye if the band didn’t deliver its biggest hits for one last time: “To Be With You,” “Just Take My Heart,” “Green Tinted Sixties Mind,” “Take Cover,” “Wild World,” “Shine,” “Goin’ Where The Wind Blows” are just a few classics in the band’s repertoire, having released 9 full-length studio albums, countless of live albums, singles and rarities from 1989 to the present.

And for this tour, the band will be playing their breakthrough Platinum-selling 1991 album Lean Into It in its entirety. “We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” bassist Sheehan shares, while vocalist Martin adds: “I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as Mr. Big again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band through the years; I love playing with these guys, and if I’m being honest, I don’t want it to ever end – but if this is really the end, then I want us all to have a happy ending together.” Guitarist Paul Gilbert concludes: “Music is like time travel – you can hear something that takes you back to 1992 – and on this tour, I want to give people the opportunity to time-travel… good music is timeless.”

PULP Live World Presents: Mr. Big – The BIG Finish will be held at the SM North Edsa Skydome. They can be purchased at all SM Tickets outlets nationwide and online via http://www.smtickets.com.

Kim Seon-ho on Being an Actor, Returning to Manila

South Korean actor Kim Seon-ho returned to Manila for a successful fan meet on July 22 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. This was the second time the “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” and “Start-Up” actor visited Manila for a fan meet — this time organized by lifestyle and clothing brand Bench.

The Bench global ambassador met the media at a press conference before the fan meet. Seon-ho talked about being an actor, style, coming back to Manila, and more.

The actor introduced himself in Filipino, “Mabuhay! Ako si Kim Seon-ho.” Through an interpreter, he added, “I really feel blessed and grateful that I [am] able to visit you guys again through Bench today.”

Seon-ho said that he wasn’t able to go to different places and experience different things in the Philippines when he visited for his first fan meet in January, but this time, he wants to try halo-halo.

Known as a versatile actor, Seon-ho shared his process on how he prepares for a role. He said he looks for references to get into a character and that he has discussions with directors. It takes about one to two months for Seon-ho to get into a certain role.

“There is so much versatility to the characters, but the character starts from me. Just like clothing, it is kind of a different look and style when I wear it. So that’s how I see the individuality of the character,” he explained.

“Being an actor, [I am] prone to having new challenges every time I get a character. This makes me a bit worried, but at the same time, excited. So as an actor, I try to always have a new challenge to connect to the character.”

Seon-ho also talked about the moniker “Good Boy,” which came from his character Han Ji-pyeong from the 2020 drama “Start-Up.” He said that the elderly usually use the term to describe young people as innocent, naive, or pure. “Since I was really into [Han Ji-pyeong’s] character, when I hear the term “good boy,” it really makes me emotional as well,” Seon-ho added.

However, the actor said that his character Hong Du-sik in “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” is the most similar to himself because he likes having conversations with different people in a light environment.

His favorite scenes are those that involve normal everyday life where viewers can relate to his character more. “Rather than talking about the genre, I really appreciate and find it special the scenes where I’m having conversations and showing people my ordinary side.”

When asked about his hobbies, the actor said that he likes taking walks while thinking about his worries and his day. He likes observing what people do to be aware of what’s happening in society.

“I try to push myself to be a better actor every day, but I think I am a lazy actor. There [is] a lot of room for improvement. But I am very optimistic of myself as an actor, so I would like to request [that everyone] look forward to me being a better actor day by day.”

Seon-ho said was happy to be back in Manila and was grateful for the warm welcome that he has received.
