Dubbed ALPAS, the digital show not only aims to bring live performances for the streaming public, but also promises music fans to experience a semblance of ‘concert’ normalcy in an intimate, stripped-down setting.
Renowned alternative/pop-rock/folk icons Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, Kitchie Nadal, Ebe Dancel, Johnoy Danao and Bullet Dumas mark their first time to co-headline a show together, performing as both solo artists and collaborators. The six music acts are also set to perform as a group in a special medley number arranged and produced by award-winning musical director, Ronaldo Tomas.
With new security and health protocols in place, the virtual showcase will be shot at the outdoor area of Conspiracy Garden Café, an iconic music venue that is home to several music greats and independent bands, and in Madrid, Spain where Kitchie Nadal is currently based.
As expected, Nadal is excited to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime collaboration, and has all the great words to say about the upcoming online show. “I’m excited to work with the artists that I admire in the music industry. It’s an opportunity that I wouldn’t want to miss.” Barbie Almalbis explains that this is as close to playing for a live audience, and that performing in Conspiracy again makes her feel nostalgic. “I’m more than happy to share the stage with the artists that I look up to, and hopefully, the energy and enthusiasm would resonate with the music fans once they see it on the virtual screen. It’s something that we’ve worked hard for.”
3D + ABK Alpas virtual presser held earlier
Aia, Barbie and Kitchie (ABK) have staged a sold-out, collaborative concerts at the Music Museum in 2016 and 2017, and held a benefit online show in 2020 to raise funds for the employees of indie music venues in Metro Manila. Ebe, Johnoy, and Bullet (3D) on the other hand, have performed as 3D, and went on to headline three, sold-out concerts: twice at the Music Museum in 2015 and 2016, and at the Kia Theatre in 2018. These concerts were organized and produced by GNN.
Bullet Dumas admits that he missed performing, and that ALPAS came at the right time when everyone needs a source of entertainment to keep them going while public life is on lockdown. “I haven’t performed in an actual show since early pandemic,” the young music virtuoso shares in a statement. “People in the live events industry are barely surviving, so this opportunity from KUMU and GNN means a lot to me. And I know how a simple show can move people especially in this crazy era of our lives.”
Johnoy Danao admits that this is the very first time since 2020 that 3D will be reunited together, and he wouldn’t want to miss it for the world. He’s also looking forward to working with Aia, Barbie and Kitchie on this special project. “It’ll be the first time that all of us are performing together, so I think that’s something to look forward to.”
When asked about what makes ALPAS worth watching despite the lack of an actual “live” audience, Aia De Leon takes pride in what the virtual concert stands for especially in the time of pandemic. “ALPAS is your connection to something real. When the songs hit home, this is your connection to the memory as well as the future promise of the live gig experience.”
Ebe Dancel echoes Aia’s sentiments, stressing the importance of music in forging a sense of community amidst the most challenging of times. “People, in my opinion, will always need music. As much as we miss the live audience, this will have to do for now. Someday, somehow, we will all see each other again.”
ALPAS: A Digital Concert is set to premiere on June 5, 2021 from 6pm onwards. Tickets to ALPAS are now available for purchase via kumu, with a price of P499 for general admission. For details on how to buy tickets, go to this site: www.kumu.live
A hot collaboration with revered producers Jason Strong (Nico Farais, Naika) and Cambo (Doja Cat, Bea Miller), and his edgiest release to date, Friends showcases Jack’s flawless vocal range and further solidifies his ability to create the kind of pop banger the world is ready to get out and dance to. Following his deeply reflective debut single ‘The Year the World Stood Still’ about the 2020 pandemic pause, and his upbeat (yet poignant) second release ‘Arms’ about longing for the return of personal contact, ‘Friends’ elevates us to the next progression in Jack’s journey.
About Jack Newsome: Young LA-based singer-songwriter Jack Newsome, who emerged as a fast rising talent following his breakout stint on NBC’s Songland, has been capturing attention since signing a publishing and management deal with mentor Shane McAnally (SMACKSongs), as well as a record deal with 12Tone Music. His talent has landed him multiple syncs and high profile writing credits, and he is now passionately focused on his own music releases.
Her latest pop single narrates how having feelings for someone can make you lose yourself. She described “Train of thought” as “…basically about love and how this girl talks about how a guy makes her feel something special.” Sam is yet to announce the release date of her single’s official music video.
“Train of Thought” premiered on Universal Records’ Tiktok account on the evening of May 20. Sam Cruz got personal with her live fans and performed the chorus of “O sole mio”, an Italian song she loved to sing growing up. Apart from her charming qualities and vocal prowess, Sam skilfully plays the guitar, ukulele, and a little bit of keyboard.
Known to be a member of a celebrity clan, Sam Cruz aspires to pave her own career path and continues to explore songs that highlight her vocal strengths. Leaning towards RNB and pop music, Sam shared that her musical inspiration comes from Ariana Grande and Julie Anne San Jose among many others. With her undoubted talent, potential, and charisma, Sam Cruz is definitely one of the promising artists to watch out for this year.
Japanese Breakfast, the musical project of multi-hyphenate Michelle Zauner, releases a self-directed video for their new single “Savage Good Boy,” starring Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos.
“‘Savage Good Boy’ came from a headline I read about billionaires buying bunkers. I was interested in examining that specific type of villainy, and I found myself adopting the perspective of a rich man coaxing a young woman to come live with him underground, attempting to rationalize his almost impossible share of greed and miserliness,” says Zauner. “I knew I wanted the music video to be a pretty literal interpretation of that idea. I wanted to juxtapose images of this post-apocalyptic, industrial bunker with the lightness and extravagance of rococo fashion and set design. Aiming for that balance, my cinematographer, Adam Kolodny, and I were really inspired by Chan Wook Park’s The Handmaiden, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and Sally Potter’s Orlando.”
Japanese Breakfast has also expanded their summer and fall tours, which kick off July 28th in Asbury Park, NJ. All dates below.
Jubilee, Japanese Breakfast’s anticipated new album is available for pre-order now and due June 4th via Dead Oceans.

From the moment she began writing her new album, Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner knew that she wanted to call it Jubilee. After all, a jubilee is a celebration of the passage of time—a festival to usher in the hope of a new era in brilliant technicolor. Zauner’s first two albums garnered acclaim for the way they grappled with anguish; Psychopomp was written as her mother underwent cancer treatment, while Soft Sounds From Another Planet took the grief she held from her mother‘s death and used it as a conduit to explore the cosmos. Now, at the start of a new decade, Japanese Breakfast is ready to fight for happiness, an all-too-scarce resource in our seemingly crumbling world.
How does she do it? With a joyful noise. Jubilee bursts with the most wide-ranging arrangements of Zauner’s career. Each song unfurls a new aspect of her artistry.
In the years leading up to Jubilee, Zauner also took theory lessons and studied piano in earnest for the first time, in an effort to improve her range as a songwriter: “I’ve never wanted to rest on any laurels. I wanted to push it as far as it could go, inviting more people in and pushing myself as a composer, a producer, and arranger.”
Throughout Jubilee, Zauner is hardly fictionalizing her lyrics, instead pouring her own life into the universe of each song to tell real stories, and allowing those universes, in turn, to fill in the details. Joy, change, evolution—these things take real-time, and real effort. And Japanese Breakfast is here for it.
Ben&Ben took the month of May by storm, teasing fans with the grandest way possible to announce a new era in music. First, there was “Upuan,” a cinematic piece of pop music that swirls intimately against a backdrop of nature retreat. And then there’s “Magpahinga,” a lovingly sparse ballad that embraces the importance of healing on one’s own terms. Instead of recapturing old glories, both songs are bold enough to leave us ending in places both infinite and enduring, widening our sense of appreciation for the band on a purely intimate level.
Today, the nine-piece collective have set the bar high with the release of “Magpahinga” music video on YouTube. Touching on delicate matters such as death, grief, and the final moments spent with a loved one, the visual narrative carries the weight of losing someone special in the most uncertain of times, and puts its arms around you with a reassuring message that everything will be alright.
“The video explores the relationship between a father and a daughter, and the emotional burden that comes with having to say goodbye,” says guitarist and lead vocalist Paolo Benjamin. “It isn’t easy to come to terms with mortality, but it also brings out the most tender moments and cathartic resolutions.”
The music video of “Magpahinga” stars multi-awarded veteran actor Joel Torre and acclaimed actress-director Bela Padilla as a father-daughter tandem spending their last moments together. Guitarist and lead vocalist Miguel Benjamin points out that by “observing two very different but distinct generations of artists,” the band had a great time learning about the award-winning actors’ process and technique. “We loved seeing them get deep into character and really owning their roles wholeheartedly. There was a clear respect for the craft, and the message we all wanted to convey was there.”
Keyboardist Patricia Lasaten echoes Miguel’s observations, praising the astounding craftmanship and chemistry between the two leads. “There was a moment in the filming of the video where you could really feel the thickness of heightened tensions in the room because of the nature of the scene. That’s how real it was.”
The visual accompaniment of “Magpahinga” was helmed by filmmaker and frequent collaborator Jorel Lising. According to bassist Agnes Reoma, Lising was unanimously picked for his ability to bring out tender, intimate and raw moments in a narrative context. “Since he has been based here at the Ben&Ben House as well, he was with us even during the writing and recording of the song, and thus he deeply understands the context and message of the song as well.”
Ben&Ben’s “Magpahinga” music video is out now on YouTube and all other video platforms.
Conjuring enchanting visions of Paris, France with its idyllic coffee shops & dreamy fashion, the R&B track is a special piece about laying one’s heart on the line for something which is never quite guaranteed. “It was written during a time of intense vulnerability, when life and love went through tumultuous ups and downs,” shares Dru.
Eiffel Tower was jointly written by Joel Tan of Gentle Bones and Dru Chen, and solely produced by Dru. Starting off slow and steady, the verses are quiet and intimate, a contrast to the bustling, explosive chorus that makes us feel like we’re in celebration of love, especially with Dru singing, “Pray you don’t let me go / ‘Cause who’s gonna catch me / When I fall for you”. The song speaks straight to the heart – encouraging us to let down our guard and let a lover or, l’amoreux, into our lives.
With the country still in a pandemic and our hopes of traveling dashed, Eiffel Tower also aims to transport its audience to its namesake and impart that high, giddy feeling you get when experiencing happy moments with a loved one. Eiffel Tower is about exploring relationships – whether romantic, platonic or familial, it ultimately displays the “intimacy of a lifetime of human connection”. It is about discovering the world through new lenses and constantly pushing one another to be better.
The song opens with the hook, “It’s all because of your love” and is peppered throughout the rest of the song – in varying degrees of emotion and melody. We also hear a satisfying electric guitar riff in the bridge, representing a culmination of the Pop/R&B track’s wonder and whimsy in this warm feeling we call love. Eiffel Tower shows maturity in both its production and lyrics – inspiring audiences to help each other pursue their dreams instead of tearing them down. “We can choose to come out stronger, more invigorated, and more alive than ever,” Dru observes, “That is the ultimate human experience.”
Multi-platinum, critically acclaimed singer/songwriter, Olivia Rodrigo, today released her highly anticipated debut album, SOUR, via Geffen Records. All throughout the LP, the 18-year-old musician displays her incredible talent for capturing complex emotions in high-impact, dynamic pop songs. The album, entirely co-written by Rodrigo, embodies a minimalist yet mesmerizing form of alt-pop, each song centered on the L.A.-based artist’s beautifully detailed storytelling, unforgettably original narrative voice, and undeniable boldness. SOUR is available to stream or download HERE.
For Rodrigo, one of the greatest joys in life comes from deliberately tapping into her deepest heartache. “There’s nothing like sitting at the piano in my bedroom and writing a really sad song,” she says. “It’s truly my favorite thing in the world; it’s so inspiring to see my music affect people and maybe help them to feel less alone too.”
“I’m also fascinated by the idea of a relationship going sour—how a person you loved so much and told all your secrets to can become the person you can’t stand,” Rodrigo explains about the album’s title. “For me, the goal of all music is to take these complicated feelings and externalize them in a way that makes people feel seen.”
On January 8, 2021, the arrival of Rodrigo’s record-breaking, triple-platinum, debut single, “drivers license,” revealed the tremendous power of her raw self-expression—and ultimately cemented her status as the most promising young artist to emerge this year. The song premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, holding the top spot for eight consecutive weeks and becoming the first in 2021 to hit one billion total global streams. “drivers license” is also the first this year to be RIAA certified at Gold, Platinum, double and triple-Platinum, not to mention scoring the No. 1 spot at Top 40 radio for five consecutive weeks and having the quickest trip to the top spot for a first-time charting female artist.
On April 1, 2021, Rodrigo made music industry history again with the release of her incredible sophomore single, “deja vu” – becoming the first artist to debut her first two proper singles in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. On May 14, 2021, Rodrigo also shared the third-released track from SOUR, “good 4 u,” which has already amassed 70 million global audio streams and 40 million global video streams in its first week. She also performed the new song during her musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live on May 15, which Billboard praised, saying “Olivia Rodrigo crushed it during her SNL debut.”
